The Power of Discipline

Do you value discipline? I certainly do. Discipline is important because it is through it that children and even adults are corrected and evolved. More important than the discipline others give us is self-discipline, that is, the ability to correct and control oneself. This is by far the best form of discipline because we will not always have someone to correct us if we do something wrong or to "push" us to do something when we have no motivation to do so. Self-discipline is so important because it helps us recognize our own mistakes and find motivation to do anything even if we don't want to at first. If you are someone who does not have good self discipline or who gets angry when disciplined, I will cover in this article 3 ways to be someone more disciplined and also accept the discipline that others give you:

# 1 - Think of discipline as something good

Would you say that discipline is a good thing? For some it is, especially when they discipline others. But when discipline is directed at them, it is another story. I know people who are so proud that they take no advice from anyone because they feel superior to them in any way. No matter how wrong we are, we usually tend to justify ourselves, accuse someone else, or look for mistakes in those who discipline us, all short-sighted and objectionable. Just imagine how much better they would have gotten if they took advice? Regardless of whether we are guilty or not, the best thing to do is always to accept the discipline because we agree that if someone is disciplining us is because we gave them a good reason for that right? Moreover, even if discipline does not apply in our case, we should always be grateful, as this shows that the person cares about us to the point of wanting to see us improve. So be grateful for any discipline you receive and view it as a proof of love from the person giving it...

# 2 - Train yourself daily

Self-discipline, put simply, is the ability to correct and motivate oneself and is very important in helping us achieve goals. Many give up on even starting their goals because their laziness or lack of motivation is greater than their self-discipline. Hence the need to train self-discipline to be greater than laziness and lack of motivation. But as you might imagine, just like a muscle, self-discipline needs to be gradually trained. How to do this? Train it daily by doing things you don't like even small things. For example, do you hate waking up early in the morning? Do you hate having to make your bed right after waking up? Do you hate to exercise, do your personal study or read the bible? So train yourself by doing these little things you hate and then you will be happy to do anything even if you have no motivation to do them. Remember: Self discipline is important if you want to achieve your goals...

# 3 - Reflect on your actions daily

As human beings, we make mistakes every day. Unfortunately, this is a fact that we must accept. So if we make mistakes every day, shouldn't we self-evaluate our words and actions every day too? After taking some action I try to evaluate if I acted the best even if no one scolded me for it. This is desirable because it helps to train my self discipline. So either at the end of the day or after taking action, try to re-evaluate your actions and see if you could not have done better to improve if a similar situation arises on a future occasion...

Did you know that discipline does not always involve punishment as many people think? As expressed in the Bible, discipline may also involve guidance, instruction, counsel, education, rebuke, and correction. See this article on jw.org for a better understanding...
